Tengefu is the Swahili word for “protected marine area.” Abubakar spends his days dreaming about corals. When helping his daughter with math homework, they add and subtract corals. He is the former chair of the Beach Management Unit and helped start the reef restoration program on Wasini Island in Southeast Kenya. He believes the corals are critical for his community via ecotourism and sustainable fisheries and for his children’s future on Wasini.
