While I was interning at The Boston Globe in 2011, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., after 16 years on the run. Bulger is known as one of the most dangerous and notorious gangsters in Boston and spent more than 10 years on the FBI’s “Most Wanted” list. I was sent to Santa Monica and the surrounding areas with two reporters to document the community and show the lifestyle he had lived while on the run. The challenge really being that I was often photographing something that wasn’t actually there, because it had happened in the past. He is currently on trial in Boston. Below is a short film edited by Lauren Frohne with work that I shot while in California as well as two other Globe photographers.
